10 Questions to Ask a Tailor Before You Commit to a Custom Suit
A custom suit is a relationship as much as a purchase — you’re trusting someone’s hands, judgment, and honesty for weeks. Ten minutes of good questions before you commit will tell you more than any website. At Bespoke Ensemble, we welcome every one of these. Here’s what to ask any tailor — and what the answers should sound like.
1. “Where is the suit actually made?”
The single most revealing question. You want a specific answer — ideally an in-house workshop you can see. Vague talk of “our facility” usually means overseas outsourcing.
2. “Is the jacket fused or canvassed?”
Full or half canvas is the mark of quality construction; fusing is the shortcut. A good tailor will explain the difference enthusiastically, not defensively.
3. “Do you draft a new pattern for me, or adjust a block?”
This separates true bespoke from made-to-measure — both legitimate, but priced differently. Our guide to what sets NYC’s top tailors apart unpacks why the pattern matters so much.
4. “How many fittings are included?”
Bespoke should include at least a basted fitting and a forward fitting. “None needed” is a red flag dressed as confidence.
5. “Can I see and handle the actual fabrics?”
Swatch books are the floor, not the ceiling. Ask about mills, weights, and seasonal cloths — depth of stock signals a serious house.
6. “What happens if the finished suit doesn’t fit?”
Listen for a concrete remake-or-adjust policy, not reassurance. Craftsmen who control production stand behind it in writing.
7. “What’s included in the price — and what costs extra?”
Fittings, alterations, monogramming, rush fees: get the full picture up front. Transparent houses answer without flinching.
8. “How long will it take?”
Honest answers come with stage-by-stage detail. Ours is 2–4 weeks, and we’ll show you exactly where those weeks go.
9. “Who does the actual sewing?”
Names, not departments. The best shops are proud to introduce the hands behind the work.
10. “Can I see garments in progress?”
A workshop with basted jackets on stands is a workshop that does real bespoke. It’s also simply a pleasure to see. For more on vetting shops, read how to find a good suit tailor in NYC.
